Now don’t get me wrong, I liked Susan, but I just found myself disappointed that Death wasn’t in the book very much at all and slightly annoyed that he was off uncovering the meaning of life and trying discover himself… again! This is interspersed with Susan’s story of learning quickly, on the job, how to collect souls, which is brought together when she tries to change fate and save Imp, who she has a major crush on. I also really enjoyed getting to know the band members: Glod the dwarf, Lias (Cliff) the troll, and Imp Y Celyn (Buddy), the young, naïve harpist from Llamedos (clearly a fun poke at Wales and its famous poet Dylan Thomas). The main thread of Soul Music is of course a parody of our world’s rock’n’roll phenomenon in the 1950s – I simply loved all the ‘wink, wink, nudge, nudge’ details that Pratchett incorporated, such as: screaming fans, gyrating hips, new fashion, uncontrollable tapping toes and band nicknames. But it becomes especially so when said Grandfather disappears leaving you to have to take over the family business! Things aren’t going too bad, with the help of a skeleton rat and a talking raven, until Susan’s next job turns out to be a pretty boy, with a sylvan voice and magical skills on a guitar… I mean being sixteen is always difficult, even more so when you have the unnerving habit of going invisible and your Grandfather rides a white horse and wields a scythe. Meanwhile, Susan Sto-Helit is having a difficult time. They call it Music With Rocks In… and it won’t fade away! What they accidentally create has a beat, you can dance to it, it is lawless and it changes people. In Soul Music, we return to Pratchett’s magic, weird and fantastical Discworld, as the land is gripped by a new and addictive music created by four, poor and disgruntled musicians come together: a dwarf with a horn, a troll with musical rocks, an orangutan with a new-fangled organ, and a elfish-looking boy with a mysterious guitar. Hello my fellow bookworms, today I am bringing you my thoughts on the fantasy novel, Soul Music by Terry Pratchett, which is the 16th book in Pratchett’s fantastical Discworld series, originally published in 1994, and is the 3rd adventure to feature the black cloaked, scythe carrying, cat loving character of Death.
